What to see in A Illa de Arousa: a visitor's guide

Beautiful beaches, a natural park, turquoise islets and the best seafood in the ría. Here is what not to miss in A Illa de Arousa.

Views of the Ría de Arousa from A Illa de Arousa

A Illa de Arousa is the only inhabited island in the Rías Baixas reachable by bridge, and a perfect base to explore the Ría de Arousa. It has quiet beaches, a natural park, and islets a short kayak or boat trip away. Here are the essentials.

Areoso Island, the “Galician Caribbean”

It is the jewel of the area: a protected islet of white sand and turquoise water, a short distance from the coast. To land you need a Xunta authorization (we process it when you book), and the most popular way to get there is by kayak from the island itself.

The Carreirón Natural Park

At the southern tip of the island, this protected area combines pine groves, coves and a wetland with birdlife. It is ideal for a walk or a relaxed kayak route along the coastline, with views over the ría.

Beaches for every plan

  • Calm, shallow stretches of sand, perfect for families.
  • More secluded coves to unwind.
  • Well-oriented spots for the sunset over the ría.

Experience the ría from the water

The best way to understand the Ría de Arousa is to get on the water: kayak out to the islets, a boat trip among the mussel rafts, or paddle surf in calm waters. These are beginner- and family-friendly plans, always with local operators who keep an eye on weather and tides.

And to eat: straight from the ría

Raft-grown mussels, clams, cockles and fish of the day. The island is famous for its seafood, so save your energy to end the day at a good restaurant or furancho.
